LOOPSIDER VI

Loophole, Boddinstrasse 60, 12053 Berlin, Germany

This is a very last minute one as it is going to take place tonite, sorry, but if you read this in time: Loopsider is an interesting series of music evenings happening on Tuesday in the klein aber fein Neukölln venue Loophole. It always features plenty of experimental livesets and it starts early to give you the chance to catch the last U-Bahn – hopefully. Tonite is especially recommended as it features the first live performance ever of Roman Catholics, a new music project whose members – as the name suggests – come from traditionally catholic countries such as, well, Italy and Austria. I haven’t heard much of their stuff yet but I can tell you they are talented musicians and you will hear again about them soon, so why not discover their music tonite already.

The Sound of Belgium special screening

Sameheads, Richardstr.10, 12043 Neukölln, Berlin

If early 80s dance music was a lot about Italo Disco, late 80s one was all about New Beat – at least for me, though I was still a little kid at the time and discovered + got obsessed with the whole stuff some time later, by searching – and finding – maxi-single pearls forgotten in the one-euro-box of second-hand record shops run by 70s prog rock nostalgic guys with big moustaches who would file any dance thing under ‘junk’ and give away rarities to my hungry-for-synth-beats self. The new Sound of Belgium – there was also a label called like that – was acid, kinky, visionary, imbued with fat 303 and 808 lines and surreal Belgian humor. Sameheads will be screening a documentary about this very special scene and offering a New Beat inspired Dj Set after the film as well. Free entrance!

IN ZAIRE + UV GLAZE

BEI RUTH, Ziegrastr.13, 12057 Berlin

In Zaire is a psychedelic tribal quartet – with a touch of electronic and dub-funk – involving members of the italian duo G.I. Joe, Claudio Rocchetti and Stefano Pilia. Some of them are based in Berlin, some in Bologna, some in outer space, and they are also very busy with several other music – and non music, Claudio recently released a short novel book – projects. In short: they don’t play live in town that often, and you should take the chance if you can ’cause they are a great live band.

Pep Vidal – As a Whole

Galerie Rolando Anselmi, Winsstrasse 72, 10405 Berlin

Pep Vidal is a visual artist and mathematician whose work and research focus on infinitesimal changes. Among many impressive things such as getting a degree in Mathematics, writing a PhD in Physicy and completing a Master Program in Contemporary Art, he also found the time to contribute to Occulto Issue Pi with a wonderful artist’s project. I just had the chance to see a preview of his solo exhibition in Berlin that will open on June 13th – I highly recommend you to go there and also to check his previous and upcoming projects.
